I am a chiropractor, and as such am bound by social pressure to always be a representative of chiropractic. Being a christian I also represent Christ. Being a citizen of the United States of America I represent my country. If I were to evangelize or debate politics on my professional site though I would turn some people off, and I want everyone to be able to come to my practice without feeling judged or threatened. If you would like my professional comments please visit the links provided. With that in mind this is not a professional blog, and I will be exercising my freedom of speech here. I will express my opinion and hope that you too will be willing to express yours. Please comment, question, and enjoy my personal blog. I plan too.

Do You Remember Slam Books

I've come to the conclusion that much of blogging is very self centered, and juvenile. I suppose that's the point, but well let me give you some examples. First of all I am addressing an audience as though many people read my blog, when in reality very few people follow my work, and even less read it when they happen upon it. That doesn't stop my self centered delusion. I continue to write, odd as it may be with the recognition that few are really reading. It is a great way to get your opinions out there and resolve the desire to be heard without really doing anything.

Next there is the example of this tagging thing. My wife has done many now, where someone asks you to tell 100 random things about yourself, or 6 quirks about you. Then you have to pass it on to everyone in your blogroll or tag 6 other people. The only thing this is missing is the standard, "tell who in the 7th grade you would kiss." Do you remember Slam Books from Junior High School? The funny thing is that people that I know would delete these as SPAM if it came in email readily embrace these things on their blog. Now the slam books I remember as a kid were very tame and usually got passed around a very limited circle of friends. These ones on blogs are public, but they still only get passed around circles of friends. In fact just like the junk email you get them over and over again because each of your friends gets them and they all tag you and you tag them etc... I've refused to participate thus far, but I don't know how long I can hold out, after all everyone is doing it, and they were sooo fun back in junior high. I enjoy reading everyone elses, so...Nah...

For now I'll stick with my narsisistic rants, and observations, and pass on the e-slam books. Now I expect everyone to take a trip down memory lane and post all of your memories about junior high. I look forward to reading them.

Okay Ebeneezer Slamooge, TAKE THIS:

1. Who was my 10th grade crush?

A: YOU!

2. Who was my first real kiss?

A: YOU!

3. Who is the best husband and daddy around?

A: YOU!

I prefer to consider blogs as journals.

Love you!

Yeah, I think blogs are often not read by very many. However, I think they are, as Trishelle points out, much like journals. They are very therapeutic, even if no one reads them but the people who write them.

I guess there were no slam books when I was in high school. Or at least nobody passed one to me.

That's really cute that your wife answered. I came across this post because of a book I read when I was in high school in about 1972. It was called "Teaching as a Subversive Activity" and it was about the experience of a couple of white teachers who found themselves working at an inner-city school (if I remember right). It very definitely went over slam books as a major social activity among the students. I had never seen or heard of one before. Apparently in other schools they took different forms!
Good luck to you in your "one-man" war against inane blog posts!
